About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Michael the Archangel in Līvāni stands in the town of Līvāni, Latgale. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is protected by the state as an architectural monument.
The first wooden Catholic chapel in Līvāni was built in 1678 at the expense of the Polish nobleman Leonard Pociej; in 1685 it was consecrated by Bishop M. Poplavskis. In 1758 it was replaced by a second wooden church. The present church of dolomite masonry was built in 1861, through the efforts of the parish priest Juozapas Godlevskis, from building timber donated by Baron Korff of Krustpils Castle.
In 1907–1908, on the initiative of the parish priest Vitalijus Treibšas, the church was enlarged, with new rooms added on both sides of the tower. The three-part building with its tower is 42 metres long and 20 metres wide, covered with a sheet-metal roof, with wooden floors.
The church holds the painter Georgas Šenbergas's work "St John the Baptist," fourteen early-19th-century paintings of the Stations of the Cross, and copies of works by the German painter Vogel.
