About the Church

The Church of St Mary Magdalene in Madaleņa stands in the village of Gospori, in the Jersika civil parish, Līvāni municipality, Latgale. The Christian origins of this locality are old – as early as the end of the 18th century a wooden Catholic chapel stood here.

The present masonry church was built in the old cemetery in 1821 by the priest Ambrazevičius. Until 1930 it was a filial church of the Līvāni parish, later becoming an independent parish. It is a modest church of Romanesque form, built of fieldstone, about 18 metres long and 10 metres wide.

The church holds an 18th-century painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, as well as an image of Mary Magdalene painted in 1934 by the artist M. Drancena. The church is enclosed by a wooden fence, and the parish has two cemeteries.
