About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Kalupe stands in the village of Kalupe, in Augšdaugava Municipality, Latgale. It is one of the larger Catholic churches in the region, and belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The first wooden church, built of pine logs, stood in Kalupe from 1795 to 1882. The foundations of the present masonry church were laid in 1861, construction was finished in 1882, and in 1896 the church was consecrated by Bishop Albin Symon of Mogilev. The building was designed by the noted Baltic architect Wilhelm Neumann.
The cross-plan, three-aisled church is built of red brick, has no towers, and is covered with a sheet-metal roof; it is 38.5 metres long and 19.2 metres wide. The interior walls were decoratively painted in 1913, and in 1928 three wooden altars with statues of saints were brought from Paris. The church has an organ, a harmonium and three bells.
In the church garden lies the parish priest Klemensas Apšs, murdered in 1990.
