About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sarkaņi stands in the settlement of Sarkaņi, in the Rēzekne region, in Latgale, and belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The first wooden chapel here was built at the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the 18th century. Construction of the present masonry church was begun in 1830 by Fr Anton Lapkovski; the church was completed in 1860 with funds from his bequest and from the offerings of parishioners, and in 1897 it was consecrated by Bishop F. Symon.
It is a simple rectangular building of fieldstone and red brick with a small square turret. The church preserves a miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, painted on wood in the 15th–16th century and covered with a silver revetment. Beside it stands a masonry bell-tower chapel; both structures are state-protected architectural monuments.
