About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St Anthony of Padua in Sprukti stands in the village of Sprukti, in the Naujiene civil parish, the Augšdaugava municipality, in south-eastern Latgale. The church belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona and is dedicated to St Anthony of Padua.
The first wooden chapel on this site was built in 1785, but it had fallen into complete disrepair by the second half of the 19th century. The design of the present masonry church was prepared by the parish's first parish priest, Vaclovas Kozlovskis; construction began in 1933, the cornerstone was blessed in September of that year, and the church itself was consecrated in 1935 and finally completed in 1938. The work was continued by parish priests Vladislavas Litaunieks, who added the towers, and Staņislavs Kokins.
The church is built of concrete brick, with an unplastered facade; it is a three-aisled building about 28 metres long and 16 metres wide, with two towers and wooden barrel vaults. The Sprukti church remains a place of prayer and community life for local Catholics.
