About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Majori stands in the Majori microdistrict of Jūrmala, on Pilsoņu Street, not far from the famous resort's seafront. It is a historic Jūrmala Catholic church belonging to the Archdiocese of Riga.
The church was built in 1884. At that time, in the Russian Empire, Catholic churches could only be built with a special permit from the sovereign, so the building was initially fitted out as a secular hall and only later adapted for worship. A bell tower was added to the church in 1911.
The church is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the resort town of Jūrmala it has long been important not only to local residents but also to Catholics holidaying there in summer. To this day the church in Majori remains one of the main places of prayer for the Jūrmala Catholic community.
