About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Family in Sloka is a modest Catholic church in the western part of Jūrmala, in the Sloka microdistrict, near Varoņu Street. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Riga and is one of several houses of prayer of the Catholic communities of the Jūrmala resort.
A Catholic house of prayer operated in Sloka even before the First World War, but the chapel of that time burned down during the war. The community later settled in a rebuilt building and adapted it for worship. Like many Catholic parishes of the Vidzeme region, the Sloka community is small – in this historically Lutheran land Catholics form a minority of the faithful.
The church is dedicated to the Holy Family – Jesus, Mary and Joseph – whose example reminds Christians of the holiness of the family and of mutual communion. The church in Sloka still brings together the local Catholics for communal prayer and Sunday Mass.
