About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of St John the Baptist in Ķemeri is a historic Catholic church in the famous resort of Ķemeri, on the western edge of Jūrmala. It belongs to the Archdiocese of Riga.
The church was built at the end of the 19th century – the cornerstone was blessed in 1897 and construction was completed in 1899. It is a three-aisled building in the Historicist style, about 19.5 metres long and almost 9 metres wide. At the end of the 20th century the church was thoroughly renovated, and in 1999 its centenary was solemnly celebrated.
The high altar is adorned with a painting of St John the Baptist. For a long time this church served guests taking the cure at the Ķemeri resort as well as local Catholics, and it still retains the distinctive spirit of the historic resort.
