About the Church

The Chapel of St John the Baptist in Juknaičiai stands in the settlement of Juknaičiai, in the Šilutė district – a distinctive small village recognised as protected urban heritage, whose streets intersect at right angles. The Catholic parish here was established in 1995, after Lithuania's independence was restored.

The house of prayer is fitted out in the space of a residential complex built in the second half of the 20th century, and holds about 150 worshippers. The director of the Juknaičiai farm, Zigmantas Dokšas, contributed especially to the founding of the chapel: through his efforts the altar, pews, confessionals and organ were installed, a new bell was cast, and the bell tower is maintained.

The chapel is served by the priest of Gardamas, and the main Feast of St John the Baptist is celebrated on 24 June. A parish choir is active in the community.
