About the Church
The Church of Our Lady, Help of Christians, at Išlaužas stands in the small town of Išlaužas, on the left bank of the Šventupė, a tributary of the Jiesia, in Prienai district.
The parish was founded in 1926, and the buildings of the former Išlaužas manor and 8 hectares of land were assigned to it. In 1933 the priest Vytautas Gurevičius (1889–1979) finished building the church, using the manor's masonry. In 1938 the master craftsman Jurgis Astrauskas installed the organ, and electric lighting was introduced in 1940. In 1948 the priest Gurevičius was arrested and imprisoned.
The Neo-Renaissance church, of modernised forms, is a three-aisled basilica of plastered masonry with six pairs of columns; its interior measures 33 × 14 metres, and the tower reaches 35 metres. The building is adorned with an octagonal dome with a lantern, and inside there are three altars.
