About the Church
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Pakuonis stands in the small town of Pakuonis, on the right bank of the Kuonė stream, a tributary of the Nemunas, in Prienai district.
The first church here was built about 1792, when Bishop Ignotas Jokūbas Masalskis founded the parish. The present masonry church was built in 1883 by the priest Kazimieras Jasiulevičius-Jasulaitis together with the parishioners, and was consecrated in 1886 by the auxiliary bishop Juozapas Holiakas. The curate Juozapas Šmulkštys supported the banned Lithuanian press, and the future Bishop of Telšiai, Justinas Staugaitis, took care of preserving the church during the First World War.
During both world wars the church tower was destroyed, but by 1949 the church had been rebuilt. The church, built in the Historicism style and of plastered masonry, is of rectangular plan and three aisles, with a lower apse, tall pointed-arch windows and a cylindrical wooden vault.
