About the Church
The Church of Christ's Apparition at Prienai stands in the centre of Prienai, on the left bank of the Nemunas. It is one of the most valuable wooden churches of Sūduva, listed in the Lithuanian Register of Cultural Property.
The first wooden church here was built in 1604 at the expense of the Hungarian nobles Kasparas Horvatas and Kotryna Užali. The second was built in 1674 by the priest Vaitiekus Izdebskis. The present wooden church was erected in 1750, was extended in 1875, and was consecrated in 1885 by the Bishop of Seinai, Juozapas Holiakas.
The Neo-Baroque church is of cruciform plan, with two towers, a three-part apse and four small towers. It has an organ by the master craftsman Jonas Garalevičius, and in the churchyard stands the Šiukštai chapel, built of masonry in 1875. In 1971 the curate Juozas Zdebskis was arrested here for catechising children.
