Kauno Švč. Jėzaus Širdies bažnyčia

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Kaunas is a remarkable gem of sacred architecture, located in Žemieji Šančiai, Kaunas. The church's history and architecture reflect not only religious but also cultural and social changes in 20th-century Lithuania.

The church's roots go back to the end of the 19th century, when services began to be held in the cemetery chapel at Šančiai, celebrated by priests from Kaunas. Interestingly, from 1909 the singing was in Lithuanian every other Sunday, thereby encouraging and nurturing the Lithuanian language and culture.

Before the First World War, on the initiative of Father Teodoras Benediktavičius, a wooden storehouse was converted for services, during which three altars were erected and the title of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was given. After the war, in 1919, a former tsarist army gunpowder store was handed over to the local faithful and converted into the old Catholic church, with a bell tower and new bells.

When construction of a masonry church to a design by Povilas Taračkovas began in 1929, it was never officially opened, owing to changing needs. Finally, through the efforts of parish priest Mamertas Lumbė (who had been serving there since 1926) and with funds raised by the community, the present masonry church was built in 1935–1938 to a design by architect Algirdas Šalkauskis. On 24 December 1938 the new church was solemnly consecrated.

Architecturally the church is in the Modernist style with Romanesque elements, marked by monumentality, austere exterior forms and a restrained interior. It is one of the most significant examples of interwar Modernist sacred architecture in Lithuania. Innovative reinforced-concrete structures were used in its construction – one of the first of their kind in Lithuania.

One striking feature of the church is the fresco "Angels" on the chancel arch, painted in 1938 by the well-known Lithuanian artist Liudas Truikys. Also worth mentioning are the stained-glass windows by Stasys Ušinskas, which adorned the church after the Second World War.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus suffered repeatedly during the hardships of the 20th century, including a bombing in 1941. Nevertheless, it was continually renewed and cared for. After the war the old church was turned into a Soviet military store, and part of its premises is now privately owned.

Today the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Kaunas is not only an important religious centre but also a valuable architectural monument, protected as a Lithuanian cultural heritage site. Visiting this church, one can feel the spirit of history and take in a unique wonder of Modernist architecture.
