About the Church
The Roman Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kaunata stands in the settlement of Kaunata, in Rēzekne Municipality, Latgale, near Lake Rāzna. It belongs to the Diocese of Rēzekne–Aglona.
The first wooden church here was built in 1702 at the expense of the landowner Soltāns. After it burned down, the present masonry church was built and consecrated in 1850, with a contribution from the noblewoman Zuzana Druva. The priest Juozapas Macuļevičius, who worked in Kaunata, wrote the first practical guide for the Catholics of Latgale.
The Classicist masonry church is about 20 metres long and 10 metres wide. The high altar's painting depicts the Virgin's visit to St Elizabeth, the side altars hold paintings of St Elijah and St George, and a 19th-century organ survives.
