About the Church

The Mosėdis Church of St Michael the Archangel is an impressive monument of Late Baroque architecture, standing in the town of Mosėdis in Skuodas district. With its unique beauty and important historical significance, the church attracts visitors from all over Lithuania and abroad.

This church was built in 1773–1783. It is one of the oldest churches in the region, its history going back to the 16th century. The Mosėdis church is first mentioned in 1544, when Mosėdis, along with other Samogitian territories, belonged to the Bishops of Samogitia. However, the present masonry church was built only at the end of the 18th century, and its towers were added in the early 19th century.

The church's architecture is distinguished by its ornate Late Baroque style. It is a two-towered basilica with a cruciform plan and three naves. The central nave is crossed by a transept, which creates the illusion of a cruciform plan inside. Inside the church there are as many as seven altars, of which the high altar is notable for its Classicist forms and rises to the ceiling. The front transept altars are of the same height, although the side altars are more modest.

The facade is no less impressive – it is adorned with massive columns and a curved pediment decorated with volutes and pilasters. The towers, elegantly matched to the volume of the building, give the whole structure a distinctive Baroque church silhouette.

The setting of the churchyard is also worth mentioning. A tall stone masonry wall together with plastered gates, on which stands a sculptural group of St Michael the Archangel, creates a special atmosphere. Small fired-brick chapels in the churchyard, with sculpted images of the Stations of the Calvary, enrich this site.

Over the centuries the Mosėdis church has performed not only religious but also cultural functions. A parish school operated here, and in 1895–1898 the renowned Lithuanian writer and public figure Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas served as its priest. In addition, from 1910 to 1914 a branch of the Lithuanian Catholic Temperance Society operated here, encouraging people to give up alcohol and live healthily.

The Mosėdis Church of St Michael the Archangel is not only an important religious centre, but also a valuable cultural and historical heritage site, symbolising the rich past and spirit of the town of Mosėdis.
