About the Church
The Church of St George at Daukšiai stands in the small town of Daukšiai, in Marijampolė district municipality, in a scenic spot between the Žuvintas and Amalvas marshes, on the left bank of the River Dovinė. This setting gives the church a sense of peace and the distinctive beauty of the Sūduva region.
The first wooden church here was built before 1730, and in 1774, after the old one had fallen into decay, a new one was erected. The parish was founded in 1780. A fire in the town in 1803 destroyed the church and its archive. The present church, of stone and brick masonry, was built in 1860–1864, and in 1905 the priest Kazys Mačiukevičius built a masonry presbytery.
During the Second World War the church tower was pulled down and the altar damaged. In 1958 the church was rebuilt with a new bell tower, and the high altar was brought from the closed Church of the Holy Trinity in Kaunas. A metal fence encloses the rectangular building, with its small tower and lower three-sided apse.
