About the Church
The Church of St Casimir in Igliauka stands in the small town of Igliauka, about 1.5 kilometres north of the road linking Vilnius, Prienai and Marijampolė. The Gothic Revival church is an expressive symbol of the heritage of the Sūduva region.
Construction of the church was begun in 1781 by the Prienai elder Count Mykolas Butleris, and in 1783 Igliauka became a filial church of Marijampolė. The present masonry church was built in 1882–1884 and consecrated in 1884 by Bishop Juozapas Olekas. The parish is connected with the priest Juozapas Gegužinskas, who was exiled to Siberia in 1864 for suspected support of the 1863 insurgents.
In 1915 a fire devastated the church, and its tower was blown up; the church was rebuilt after 1921. The Gothic Revival building is on a Latin-cross plan, with one tower, built of brick and stone, and the churchyard is enclosed by a stone-masonry fence. After the Second World War the church was cared for over many years by the priest Alfonsas Svarinskas.
