About the Church
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Riečiai stands in the village of Riečiai, about 11 kilometres north of Simnas and just 1.5 kilometres east of Lake Žuvintas, in Marijampolė district municipality. It is a landscape-rich spot near the well-known Žuvintas reserve.
In 1744 a chapel stood at the Riečiai manor, and by 1791–1804 a permanent priest was already serving there. The present wooden church was built in 1919, after the rebuilding of a structure devastated by the First World War. A parish was established in 1924, but it was dissolved in December 2015 and the church was attached to the Gudeliai parish.
The vernacular-style wooden church is on a rectangular plan, with a bell tower and a sacristy. High steps lead up to it, and the churchyard is adorned with a brick gate and fence.
