About the Church
The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Gudeliai stands in the small town of Gudeliai, about 6 kilometres south-east of Igliauka, in Marijampolė district municipality. The religious life of this place has its origins in the 18th century.
Around 1700 the nobleman Tiškevičius built a chapel in nearby Ivoniškis. In 1803 Gudeliai became a filial church of the Balbieriškis parish, and in 1844 the church burned down. A new wooden church was built in 1847–1849, soon followed by a wooden bell tower. The present masonry church was raised in 1893–1895 through the efforts of the priest Antanas Vilkutaitis.
The building, with features of Gothic Revival and Historicism, is on a rectangular plan, with two towers and an apse; its interior comprises three aisles separated by posts. The church is built of stone and brick, and the churchyard is enclosed by a wooden fence. The church has long preserved the deep faith tradition of the local community.
